Library Policies

Food & Drinks

  • Food and drinks are permitted in the first floor of the building. Exceptions include LITC 100 (the instruction classroom) and computer areas.
  • No food is allowed upstairs; however drinks with a secure lids or caps are allowed.
  • Users are liable for any damage to library property and equipment caused by food or drink.
  • Library patrons are expected to clean up after themselves, disposing of trash in appropriate trash containers. Please notify staff immediately of any spills or food-related mishaps.
  • No food may be ordered for delivery to the library.

Noise

  • Use of all personal electronic devices in the library require the use of headphones. Volume level on the headphones should not be audible to others. We do provide headphones for library patrons.
  • Library staff reserve the right to ask persons who are noisy or disruptive to contain or reduce the noise. After a warning, staff may ask patrons to leave the library. In the event that patrons are not responsive to these requests, Campus Safety may be called.
  • The second floor is considered a quiet study area. Quiet individual study only is permitted in the open areas of the second floor. Group study is permitted in the study rooms. Doors should be shut to contain excessive noise. If the noise level in a room exceeds reasonable limits. The staff may ask patrons to reduce the volume or to leave the library (if excessive noise persists after warning).

  • Report excessive noise to staff at the Circulation Desk.

Mobile Phones

  • To promote a quiet and productive research and study environment, please set your phone ringer to silent when entering the library.
  • All phone conversations must be conducted in areas of the library where low-level conversations are permitted.  Phone usage is permitted on the first floor, including the computer center. On the second floor cell phones are restricted to study rooms. Phone conversations are not permitted in the quiet study areas of the second floor.
  • The open area at the top of the stairs can act as a megaphone. Do not use phones near this opening unless you are comfortable with the entire first floor hearing your conversation.

  • In accordance with library policy, please conclude your phone conversation before asking for assistance at the Circulation Desk. Library staff will be happy to assist you when you are off the phone.
  • Patrons violating the policy will be asked to move to the designated areas, to turn off their phones or to leave the library.

Security

The security of Coker College’s scholarly resources is one of the responsibilities of the LITC. Collections must be secured against theft and abuse. In order to fulfill the library’s responsibility for securing materials, library staff and other designated personnel (i.e. student assistants, temporary staff, etc.) are authorized:

  • To check the books and all possessions of persons as they leave the library.
  • To request to see the identification of any person in the library.
  • To question any person if it appears that library regulations are being violated.
  • To call Coker College Campus Safety and request any person suspected of violating library regulations to wait until an officer arrives.

Children

  • All children must be accompanied by an adult. Children are not allowed to use library computers. (Only students, faculty and staff with valid log-ins may use library computers.)

Prohibited Items

• Absolutely no alcohol will be tolerated. Campus security will be notified.
• The campus tobacco-free and smoke-free policies prohibit the use of any tobacco product, including but not limited to any lit or unlit cigarette, cigar, pipe, bidi, hookah, and all forms of smokeless tobacco and any nicotine delivery device that has not been approved by the FDA for cessation. As such use of the following items will not be tolerated in the library:
           o Traditional smoking (e.g. cigarettes, pipes, cigars, etc.)
                 o E-cigarettes (vapes)
                     o Smokeless tobacco (including but not limited to chewing tobacco, snus, etc.)

Borrowing Policies

Coker Students

  • Students must present a valid student ID each time an item is checked out. (we will not accept your ID number from memory without photo ID)
  • Unless otherwise indicated books and scores circulate for 3 weeks; videos and DVDs for 3 days; CDs for 2 weeks. 1 renewal is allowed for these materials.
  • Students may have no more than 25 items (maximum of 3 videos or DVDs) checked out at one time. (The borrowing period for Marion and Florence students can be extended and will be determined on an individual basis--please call 888-887-4526 for more information.)
  • Reserve materials, journals, magazines, newspapers, reference books, record albums, microfilm, microfiche, rare books, and archival materials must be used within the building.
  • Students may recall items that have been checked out by other patrons. We reserve the right to recall books from any patron after they have been checked out for one week. If an item is recalled, you have 7 days from the date of the recall notice to return the item.
  • Students will be sent an email notice once an item is overdue. Overdue notices are a courtesy; check My Account for updated information on fines, holds, and overdue items. Please notify the library of account errors. A fine of $0.10 a day is assessed on overdue items. Accounts must be in good standing for students to receive grades and register for additional classes.
  • Items that are neither returned nor renewed will be assumed to be lost and the borrower will be billed for their replacement. Borrowers are charged for the replacement cost of the lost item ($50.00 per item, on average) plus a processing fee ($5.00) and a billing fee ($5.00). The bill for a lost item may be adjusted if the actual cost of replacement can be determined. Borrowers who return billed items must pay the amount of the accrued fine. Refunds are not available for lost items that have been paid for. Borrowing privileges of chronically delinquent library patrons will be suspended.

Coker Faculty/Staff

  • Borrowers must present a valid faculty or staff ID each time an item is checked out. If you do not have an ID card, please arrange to get one from Student Services.
  • Books and scores circulate for 1 semester; videos and DVDs for 7 days; CDs, record albums, and audio-cassettes for 2 weeks; bound periodicals for 7 days; current periodicals for 3 days; reference books for 3 days. All materials are allowed 1 renewal.
  • Microfilm and archival materials must be used within the building. Special permission to take these items out of the library may be extended under certain circumstances-see library director for details.
  • Items that have been checked out by other patrons may be recalled. We reserve the right to recall books from any patron after they have been checked out for one week. If an item is recalled, you have 7 days from the date of the recall notice to return the item.

Coker Alumni

  • Borrowing privileges are extended at no cost to former graduates of the college. Proof of alumni status may be requested.
  • Alumni borrowing policies are the same as those of community patrons.
  • Alumni do not have PASCAL Delivers privileges.

GSSM/Hartsville IB students

  • Students must present a valid student ID each time an item is checked out. Books and scores circulate for 3 weeks; CDs and audio-cassettes for 2 weeks. 1 renewal is allowed for these materials.
  • Reserve materials, journals, magazines, newspapers, reference books, record albums, microfilm, microfiche, rare books, video recordings and archival materials must be used within the building. IB and GSSM students may not have more than 10 items out at one time.
  • Students do not have PASCAL Delivers privileges.
  • Students will be sent an email notice once an item is overdue. Check My Account for updated information on fines, holds, and overdue items. Please notify the library of account errors. A fine of $0.10 a day is assessed on overdue items. . Items that are neither returned nor renewed will be assumed to be lost and the borrower will be billed for their replacement. Borrowers are charged for the replacement cost of the lost item ($50.00 per item, on average) plus a processing fee ($5.00) and a billing fee ($5.00).   • Faculty do not have PASCAL Delivers privileges.
  • Items that have been checked out by other patrons may be recalled. We reserve the right to recall books from any patron after they have been checked out for one week. If an item is recalled, you have 7 days from the date of the recall notice to return the item.

Community Patrons

Due to high demand from the Coker students, community patrons do not have computer privileges.
  • Community patrons under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent.
  • Borrowing privileges are extended only to community patrons age 18 or older.
  • Patrons must present a valid driver's license or other picture identification each time an item is checked out. The one-time only fee cost of borrowing is $5.00.
  • A total of 5 books may be borrowed from the Main, Art, Recreational Reading, Curriculum Materials, and Juvenile Collections. They may be checked out for 3 weeks, with 1 renewal.
  • All other materials--CDs, audiocassettes, videos, DVDs, scores, reference books, reserve materials, magazines, journals, newspapers, microfilm, microfiche, and record albums--must be used within the building.
  • On occasion, certain materials may be borrowed for teaching purposes or community services only; to receive special permission for this, see the library director.
  • Community patrons do not have PASCAL Delivers privileges.
  • Patrons will be sent a bill once an item is overdue. A fine of $0.10 a day is assessed on overdue items.This bill is comprised of a non-refundable processing fee of $50 plus the cost of replacement. If the item is returned after billing but before the item has been replaced, the charge for the item will be refunded; the $50 fee will NOT. Charges for library materials that were overdue by more than 2 months will NOT be refunded. Patrons in arrears will not be able to borrow other items from the library.
  • Borrowing privileges of chronically delinquent library patrons will be suspended.
